Edge Energy Gel Product Related QuestionsUpdated 8 months ago

How many Edge gels should I use + how often?

We recommend using one Edge Energy Gel about 30 minutes before starting your workout and then taking one about every 60 minutes afterward. Some of our athletes like to take them more frequently, and others can wait 75 minutes in between each Edge, so we suggest starting with every hour and seeing how you react during exercise.

Do you need to take Edge gels with water?

No extra water is needed when consuming our Edge Energy Gels. When you first try our Edge, you may notice that it is not such a sticky, gooey substance like other gels in the sports nutrition world, and that is because our Edge is already mixed in a concentrate with some water.  Unlike other energy gels on the market, water is not required to help aid in the digestion of Edge and therefore is not needed after consumption unless you want it, making it easier to take Edge whenever and wherever you need it!

We just recommend hydrating as you normally would. If you want to supplement your hydration with extra electrolytes, our UCAN Hydrate would be a great place to start!

Should I eat breakfast or a meal before my run/workout with Edge?

It all comes down to personal preference. You don't need to have breakfast prior to running solely with UCAN.  A few examples:

UCAN Only Pre Activity  Many of our customers consume a serving or 2 of
UCAN Energy Powder or Edge about 30 minutes prior to running/exercise, and then once again every 45-60 minutes (if your runs are longer) and then eat a full meal post-workout.

Breakfast/meal Only Pre-Activity: Some like to eat a full meal before running, and then consume their first edge 45-60 minutes into their activity.

Breakfast/meal + UCAN Pre-Activity:  Some like to eat breakfast/a meal a few hours before their workout and then consume a serving or 2 of UCAN Energy Powder or Edge about 30 minutes prior to running/exercise,

I would try both on a few training runs and see which option makes you feel the best.

Can I combine Edge with other high-glycemic carbs?

Due to UCAN's minimal effect on your blood sugar, pairing it with other sugary products may diminish the blood-sugar stabilizing effect of UCAN (giving you steadier energy with no crash), but some runners do pair them together during a race and don't have any issues. Your blood sugar may not remain as steady as when you just use UCAN alone, but the slowly releasing energy from UCAN can actually help blunt the spike you'd get from just eating a GU gel. Our experts typically recommend using UCAN for the foundation of your runs or workouts and using a higher glycemic drink or gel toward the end of your race if you feel you need a little spark of rapid energy.

Can I refrigerate my Edge energy gels?

Yes! The Edge energy gels can be refrigerated before using them, but they are shelf-stable, so you do not have to keep them refrigerated.

Does Edge contain electrolytes?

Our Edge Energy Gels do not currently have added electrolytes. If you are concerned about adding extra hydration in your fueling plan, I suggest adding a stick of UCAN Hydrate into your water bottle that you can drink prior to and during your workouts.

Does Edge contain caffeine?

Edge does not currently contain caffeine, but our team is working on producing some Edge flavors with caffeine in them.

How can I carry multiple Edge energy gels with me?

Our athletes and customers have been creative with how they carry them. Some in their sports bras, waistband pockets, or even a small flexible running belt.  One of our employees has folded them gently in half and stuck them in the key pocket of their leggings..  We are always working on innovative new packaging for Edge, but that will take time!

You can also try fueling with UCAN Energy Powders before your run to pre-load with LIVSTEADY which can help cut down on the amount of Edge gels you need to carry with you.   1 Scoop of the energy powder is good for 1 hour, 2 scoops for 2 hours etc..  You can play around with it in your training and find out how it best works for you.
